1. What cookies are
Cookies are small text files that a website stores on your device when you visit. They let the site remember things between page loads: whether you have dismissed a notice, which language you prefer, or, in aggregate, which pages are popular. Similar technologies, such as browser local storage, do the same job without being technically "cookies"; we treat them identically in this policy and in our consent banner.
2. How we use them
We group our cookies into three categories. Essential cookies are required for the site to function and for us to honour your consent choices; they do not require consent under the UK Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations (PECR) or the EU ePrivacy Directive. Analytics cookies help us understand how the site is used, in aggregate and without identifying you. Functional cookies remember choices you make, such as reading progress in long reviews. Analytics and functional cookies are set only if you choose "Accept All" or enable them under "Preferences" in our banner.
3. The cookies we use
| Name | Category | Purpose | Provider | Lifetime |
|---|---|---|---|---|
ppsp-cookie-consent | Essential | Stores your consent choice so the banner does not reappear. | pickpantrystorypuls (local storage) | 12 months or until cleared |
__cf_bm | Essential | Distinguishes humans from automated traffic to protect the site. | Cloudflare | 30 minutes |
_cfuvid | Essential | Applies rate limiting per visitor to keep the site available. | Cloudflare | Session |
_ppsp_a | Analytics | Pseudonymous visitor identifier for counting unique readers. | Plausible (self-hosted proxy) | 13 months |
_ppsp_s | Analytics | Groups page views into a single visit. | Plausible (self-hosted proxy) | 30 minutes |
ppsp_read_progress | Functional | Remembers how far you have read in each review. | pickpantrystorypuls (local storage) | 90 days |
ppsp_text_size | Functional | Remembers your preferred text size on review pages. | pickpantrystorypuls | 6 months |
4. Managing your preferences on this site
When you first visit, our banner offers three choices: Accept All, Reject Non-Essential, and Preferences, which lets you enable analytics and functional cookies separately. Your choice is saved in local storage. To change it later, clear this site's data in your browser (see the instructions below) and reload any page; the banner will appear again. Rejecting non-essential cookies does not affect your ability to read anything on the site.
5. Browser opt-out instructions
You can also block or delete cookies for every website through your browser. Bear in mind that blocking essential cookies may stop parts of some sites from working.
- Google Chrome: Settings → Privacy and security → Third-party cookies, or Settings → Privacy and security → Site settings → Cookies and site data. To clear data for one site, click the padlock or tune icon in the address bar → Cookies and site data → Manage on-device site data.
- Mozilla Firefox: Settings → Privacy & Security → Cookies and Site Data → Manage Data, where you can search for pickpantrystorypuls.makeup and remove it. Enhanced Tracking Protection can be set to Strict from the same panel.
- Apple Safari (macOS): Safari → Settings → Privacy → Manage Website Data. On iOS: Settings → Safari → Advanced → Website Data. "Prevent Cross-Site Tracking" is enabled by default.
- Microsoft Edge: Settings → Cookies and site permissions → Manage and delete cookies and site data → See all cookies and site data.
Further guidance for all major browsers is published by the UK Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk and by aboutcookies.org.
6. Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control
If your browser sends a Global Privacy Control (GPC) signal, we treat it as a "Reject Non-Essential" choice and will not set analytics or functional cookies, regardless of any earlier consent. We also honour the older Do Not Track header in the same way.
7. Changes to this policy
If we add, remove or change a cookie, we will update the table above and the date at the top of this page. If a change adds a new non-essential cookie, we will ask for your consent again.
